Palazzo Toraldo di Francia
is located in the historic center 100 meters from the sea and the Sanctuary of Santa Maria Dell’Isola.
History
The first part
The first part of the building with its vaulted doorway was built in the late 17th century.
Its present building is the result of successive extensions that were completed at the end of the 19th century. The alleys surrounding the isolate have existed since time immemorial, while Largo Luigi di Francia, at the rear of the palace, is the result of demolitions following the 1783 earthquake. The first core of the building-with its vaulted doorway-was built around the end of the 17th century by Alessandro Toraldo and his son Antonio.
In the mid-eighteenth century, the palace was enlarged a first time with the purchase of an alley of which it is still possible to see in the cellars part of the cobblestones and the small windows now incorporated into the structure.Between the mid- and late-nineteenth century, adjacent buildings were purchased, which, when demolished, allowed the building to be enlarged in its present form.
The internal staircase was rebuilt in 1920.The mezzanine floor houses the family´s library and historical archives, including parchments and manuscripts from the 14th to the 20th century, which constitutes an important record of the social, political, economic and literary history of Calabria
